Introduction

Life is a journey.

Sometimes the journey is joyful, inspiring and fulfilling. At other times it’s a difficult struggle. At one time or another we all face problems and pressures, fears and frustrations, struggles and setbacks. We’ve all experienced windy roads and detours along the way.

In 2011 I experienced a “nudge” from God to write a book that might encourage those of us who are going through challenging times. In less than a year, tens of thousands of people are using Journey to Freedom. Our non-profit foundation has sent books to members of our military services, to prisons and jail ministries, to a variety of recovery and rehabilitation programs and to many other groups – to more than one hundred different groups.

If you are seeking peace, purpose, forgiveness and hope in your daily life, or you are ministering to people who have these needs, my prayer is that Journey to Freedom will prove to be helpful.

The title has been carefully chosen: Journey to Freedom: 30 Days to Forgiveness and Hope. Why 30 days? Because that seems to me to be a reasonable period of time to accomplish significant life-changes. During the last couple of months, while finalizing this book, I had to laugh out loud when I came across some book titles that promised change in much shorter time. One promised “a new you by Friday”! Another said we could revolutionize our lives in 60 seconds!

I’m not offering you a quick fix. Let’s be realistic. In real life, change takes time and a great deal of effort. To me, 30 days – one month – seem believable.

I sincerely believe – and I pray – that as you read this book, you will experience freedom, forgiveness and peace. It may take two months. It may take longer. Or it may happen sooner. But I do believe that if you try, you can do it – provided you approach it with an open mind and heart.

For me, faith was indeed a journey. I wasn’t raised in the Christian faith. Although I am a minister, I never even stepped inside a church until I was 15. And the only reason I did so at that time was to play basketball at a large church in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania! I guess I believed in a God, but to be perfectly honest, He was nothing more than “just a word” to me. But then, over time, I began to understand that God could be personal and real. A few years later in my spiritual journey, I made a faith commitment that revolutionized my life.

Every author brings a particular slant or focus to his or her writing. Let me share the two main principles underlying this book.

First, I believe that God extends to us love that we can’t even begin to comprehend!

Though some people see God as a stern and angry judge, this is not the God of the Bible. The God I have experienced has communicated His love to us in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ, who walked this planet as one of us. He was tempted, and He was one with us in our struggles. He hurts when we hurt, and He offers to give us strength and guidance in this journey of ours which often can be so difficult.

Second, I believe that faith means trusting in God, putting our cares and concerns – in fact, our whole lives – in His hands.

If you have a hard time doing that, I hope that this book will help.

I ask you to consider the following when you read Journey to Freedom:

  1. Read just one chapter every day. Resist the urge to read more. Think about each day’s message in a very personal way. Ask how it applies to your life. Each chapter is very short, so if you think it would be helpful, read it again. (Maybe you’d like to take a pen or pencil and highlight certain things that you want to remember – and possibly share with others.)
  2. Reflect on the Action Step. This is really key. I have tried to suggest specific steps for you to take each day in order to apply the life-message of that day’s chapter.
  3. Think about the Bible verse for that day and that message. Each verse has been carefully chosen to reinforce the theme of that day’s message.
  4. Finally, pray. Prayer is simply talking to God in your own words. I’ve provided an appropriate prayer for each day, but you may wish to pray in your own words.

I wish you well on your journey to freedom, forgiveness and hope. Wherever you find yourself on your spiritual journey, find the courage to take the next step. A long journey begins with a single step, and yours begins on Page 1. I’m confident that God will walk with you every step of the way. The combination of God’s help and your own efforts has the power to change your life!
